Executive Director Evaluation and Development Kit

Your executive director's review is coming. You need more than a blank evaluation form.

How do you assess a year of work fairly when board members have seen different parts of it? How do you raise a concern without letting it overshadow everything the leader has accomplished?

This kit helps board chairs and executive directors prepare for those questions. It brings the expectations, feedback forms, meeting agendas, and completed examples into one editable package, so you can spend your preparation time on the leader's work and the conversation ahead.

$199 for one organization. Edit the files and reuse them each year.

Know how to begin, including when the feedback is difficult

A meeting agenda can tell you to discuss a concern. Preparing to say it out loud takes more thought.

The kit includes sample midyear and end of year conversations with reviewer talking points, possible executive director responses, and written agreements. See how to explain a concern, hear the leader's perspective, and decide what support should follow.

The executive director also has space to explain what support they need from the board. The review ends with commitments on both sides, so the leader has something useful to act on afterward.

How this saves you time

Start with a calendar, feedback forms, and agendas designed to work together. Adapt them to your organization instead of searching for separate templates and rewriting them to fit.

Keep links to reports and examples as the year unfolds. When review time comes, you have a record to return to instead of asking everyone to reconstruct the year. The meeting questions are already written, so you can focus on the feedback you want to give.

What you can do with the kit

  • Make expectations clear before the review. A rubric with 14 expectations explains what performance looks like across the executive director's responsibilities. Use it to agree on what will be evaluated.
  • Bring useful feedback into the conversation. Reflection prompts, an evidence record, and board, staff, and community surveys help you connect different perspectives to the work being discussed.
  • Prepare for the conversations that matter. Midyear and end of year agendas include check-ins, questions, and feedback in both directions. Completed examples show how the discussion can unfold.
  • Turn the review into next steps. The evaluation summary and development plan give you a place to agree on priorities, needed support, and follow-up dates.

Make the next review easier to prepare

This kit is for board chairs, governance committee leads, and executive directors, especially those preparing their first review together.

You receive eight editable Word documents, including a Start Here guide, plus a PDF for reading. Adapt the materials to the role and your organization's calendar, then reuse them each year.

$199. One payment. One organization's internal use.

Can we adapt and reuse the kit?

Yes. One organization may edit and reuse the documents for its own executive director reviews. Participating board members, staff, and its contracted review facilitator may use working copies. Resale, public posting, and use across multiple client organizations are not included.

What should we know about the format and scoring?

The kit is in English. Complete the forms in Word; the reading PDF is not fillable. It includes scoring guidance and examples for your organization to adapt. It is not a validated assessment scale. Your organization remains responsible for evaluation decisions and approval authority.
